Whitney Houston National Enquirer

The National Enquirer’s decision to feature cover photos of the late Whitney Houston, in a casket, has touched off a furor, raising anew a debate over professional ethics, taste, morality, greed, and privacy.

How and if media outlets should portray people who have died, or who are about to die, is a discussion that has ensued time and again in recent years, with the demise of international figures such as Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, and Muammar Qaddafi; as people leapt to their deaths from the burning World Trade Center towers; and as the remains of US soldiers are returned to America at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

The questions include how to resolve potential conflicts among constitutional guarantees, such as freedom of the press and the public’s right to know versus an individual's right to privacy. They are hotly debated in newsrooms and around kitchen tables nationwide, and the answers vary widely within the hierarchy of publications, from strait-laced to tabloid.

"Turning dead bodies into cultural commodities violates the basic norm that death is private," says Ben Agger, director of the Center for Theory at the University of Texas (Arlington) Sociology Department, in an e-mail. “But, since the Kennedy assassination in 1963, much death has been public. His brother Bobby died on television, as did many in Vietnam and everywhere one finds inhumanity and war.”

Others see no excuse for publishing photos like the ones on National Enquirer's cover. Fordham University Communication Professor Paul Levinson, author of “New New Media,” sees the issue much more cut and dried.

"Although some people find photos of the dead of interest, the media serve no worthwhile purpose in satisfying that interest," says Paul Levinson, a communication professor at Fordham University," in an e-mail. "The dead deserve respect, and their families are entitled to privacy. The only photos of the dead that should ever be made public are those that may be released by family."

Who snapped the controversial Whitney Houston photos remains a mystery to the public. The National Enquirer did not include a photographer's credit. Two photos are on the cover: one a close-up of Houston's head and torso, and the other from a distance with the casket flanked by two lamps and flowers. The headline reads “Whitney: The Last Photo," and it carries the subdeck “Inside Her Private Viewing." Three bullet points offer the details that the famous singer, who died suddenly on Feb. 11, was “buried in jewelry worth $500,000,” “wore her favorite purple dress,” and “had gold slippers on her feet.” Her funeral, which was private, was held Feb. 18.

Several media outlets have already weighed in with criticism.

Whitney Houston's Family Disgusted By Casket Photo On Mag Cover

(TMZ) Whitney Houston's family had "their heart broken all over again" this week when they saw a photo of Whitney laying in her casket published on the cover of a magazine ... TMZ has learned.

Sources close to the family tell TMZ the family is disgusted the photo was printed and they have no idea how security surrounding the casket was breached. We're told the family could tell from the photo that it was taken from inside the funeral home, but they have no idea who would have snapped the pic.

Our sources say Whitney's mother, Cissy, has taken the publication of the photo the hardest. Despite their disgust and outrage, we're told the family will not investigate the matter further.

The funeral home where Whitney Houston's body was kept last week is denying that it played any role in leaking a photo of the pop legend inside her casket.

Carolyn Whigham, owner of the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, NJ, tells the Daily News she is devastated that the photo is out there and says her staff had nothing to do with it.

She tells the paper, "We did not take that photo. We did not sell the photo. We would never do something like that."

Whigham says she has received numerous threats since the publication of the photo, but that Whitney's family has told her they do not blame the funeral home.

FYI -- eight days ago, someone shopped that pic to TMZ ... we passed.

Gerald Anderson Turns Bald in 'Budoy!'
The character of the Primetime Prince Gerald Anderson as "Budoy" has a fresh new look! This time, he turns bald!

Below is how he looks like on the said hit Primetime TV series which is already shown on the recent episodes:

Gerald shaved head for his character as Budoy since his character as a mentality-ill needs to undergo a medical operation. Budoy was detected having a brain tumor. And he needs to bring to the US hospital for his operation!

Actually this is the third transformation of Budoy's look. In the early episodes of the said teleserye, Budoy is quite ugly having a long curly hair with a big front teeth. Later on when he became smarter, he turned handsome. And now on the recent chapters, he turned bald.

This is not the first time that Gerald Anderson shaves head for a TV series. Remember before in "Tayong Dalawa," Gerald's character as JR (David Garcia Jr.) was shaved when he was imprisoned?!

Right now on the recent episode of "Budoy," the Maniego Family is facing a court trial. Can the family overcome this trial in their lives? And taking about Budoy, can he recover from his tumor after his medical operation?!

These are just some of the important things we need to watch out in "Budoy" weeknights right after "E-Boy" only in ABS-CBN's undisputed Primetime Bida! "Be Happy! Be Thankful! Be Budoy!" (www.tvseriescraze.blogspot.com)

Whitney Houston ex Bobby Brown jets to ‘suicidal’ daughter, 18

WHITNEY Houston's ex-husband Bobby Brown yesterday flew to be at their daughter's side after she was said to be suicidal over her mum's death.

The R&B star — blamed by many for Whitney's drug problems — is said to be "deeply worried" for the welfare of distraught Bobbi Kristina, 18.

She was twice rushed to hospital in the 24 hours after the soul legend's body was found in a Hollywood hotel bath on Saturday. Brown, 43, pulled out of a concert in Nashville, Tennessee, with his band New Edition to fly to Los Angeles.

In a statement regarding Bobbi Kristina released yesterday, he said: "Obviously the death of her mother is affecting her. However, we will get through this tragedy as a family."

Brown was said to have been breaking down in "crying fits" when he learnt of Whitney's death.

He appeared on stage in Mississippi on Saturday night — shouting "I love you, Whitney" in the middle of the gig.

But concern over his daughter's state then drove him to leave the tour with his band.

Hours after her mother died, devastated Bobbi Kristina is reported to have downed booze and taken a sedative pill given to her by one of her mum's entourage to calm her down.

She had to be rushed to Cedars-Sinai hospital, where she is said to have been treated for anxiety.

The fragile teenager was released a few hours later.

But on Sunday night, she was stretchered out of the Beverly Hilton — where Whitney died — and taken back to the same hospital, suffering from anxiety and hysteria.

It also emerged that Bobbi Kristina fell asleep in a bathtub in her room at the hotel the day before the tragedy. Security had to be called to unlock the door and wake her up.

Brown, who had a turbulent and drug-riddled 14-year relationship with The Bodyguard actress Whitney, spoke of his grief as he arrived at Los Angeles airport.

He said there: "I am deeply saddened at the passing of my ex-wife, Whitney Houston. I appreciate all of the condolences that have been directed towards my family and I at this most difficult time."

Singer Johnny Gill, one of Brown's New Edition bandmates, said: "Bobby is struggling, he's devastated." Brown flew into LA with his fiancee Alicia Etheridge.

Only child Bobbi Kristina is said to have idolised her mum.

US journalist Jawn Murray, who interviewed Whitney a number of times, said: "They were amazingly close. They had a relationship that really resembled the relationship that Whitney had with her own mother, Cissy Houston.

"Whitney loved her daughter. Bobbi Kristina was her only child and her pride and joy. Because of that, she treasured her."

Brown, a star since the 1980s with hits like Mr Telephone Man and Don't Be Cruel, married Whitney in 1992. They divorced in 2007 but Whitney and Brown did their best to keep a civil friendship going for the sake of their daughter.

Journalist Murray added: "Let me tell you, after Bobby and Whitney's divorce, they had a functioning, healthy, blended family. Less than a week ago, Bobby, his girlfriend Alicia, their new child, Whitney and Bobbi Kristina were all photographed having a family dinner.

"They still liked each other as people, and got along very well for the sake of Bobbi Kristina."

But he said family and friends are deeply worried about aspiring dancer, actress and musician Bobbi Kristina due to her state of mind.
